What Do to With Those Pumpkins: The Jack-O'-Lantern's Story
While the pumpkins are perfect for pies, other meals, and simple decorations, the go-to use is often a jack-o'-lantern. These carved pumpkins got their name from the peat bogs of Eastern England, where often a strange light could be seen flickering above them. This was called will-o'-the wisp or jack-o'-lantern. Humans have been carving gourds for lanterns for hundreds of years, but the Halloween tradition may have begun in the 1800s. Like most traditions, there are numerous stories for how the jack-o'-lantern came to be, ranging from an 1837 competition in Limerick, Ireland, to the Druid festival of Samhain to "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow." Regardless of where these carved pumpkins originated, they're now a staple of Halloween.
