With one of the longest golfing seasons in Canada next to Vancouver Island, Kelowna and area golf courses are a treasured destination for many Canadians.
Even the pros, like Greg Machtaler, an Okanagan son, love and appreciate the local courses so he, like many others is excited for the first MacKenzie Canadian PGA Tour even this June.
Golf's finest up-and-coming players will be part of the Golf BC Champions, happening June 6-12 with a tempting prize purse totaling $175,000.
Organizers have been in negotiations for several years to get the Golf BC Championship held in the Okanagan. The MacKenzie Tour has finally been able to announce that a four-year contract has been awarded to Gallagher's Canyon Golf and Country Club.
This is the third stop on the tour calendar in the province behind events in Vancouver and on the Island in Victoria.
A spokesman for the MacKenzie Tour said that Kelowna has long been touted as the ideal B.C. destination, and with Golf BC behind the tour as title sponsor, it was easy to clinch the deal and book the dates.
The week-long tour is an important step for Canada's young pro golfers. In the past, names like Graham Delaet, Adam Hadwin and Nick Taylor used the tour as a stepping stone to prestigious careers in the PGA.
Machtaler, originally from Summerland, will be playing in the tournament thanks to a sponsor's exemption. He says the fans will be amazed at the high calibre of golf, and that many of the golfers at Gallagher's this June will someday be PGA stars.
As host, Gallagher's Canyon will have greens keepers out in full force; manicuring the 6,802-yard course and making it look as good as possible.
The tour will benefit the community and bring in tourists. Gallagher's Canyon has the support of other clubs in the Kelowna area.
The MacKenzie Tour is not just about great golf. It also raises funds for local charities and this June, the B.C. Cancer Foundation will be the tournament's charity of choice.
Funds from this tournament will be used to support critical research in B.C., providing hope for more than 26,000 residents who will likely be diagnosed with some type of cancer in 2016.
