West Kelowna Community
Long-time residents living here may refer to this community as "Westbank," now an area of more than 30,000 people that is still enjoying unprecedented growth. West Kelowna’s neighbours are the Westbank First Nation, which have contributed enormously to the growth and commerce in the municipality. In addition to opening up a great deal of housing market opportunities in West Kelowna, they operate a golf course, major shopping centres and recently opened a winery. Mission Hill Winery is a first-class winery with an amphitheatre on property that looks out over the lake. It’s located in the heart of West Kelowna and surrounding it are many of the area’s most beautiful homes and vineyards. The lakeshore is dotted with grand vacation houses, many of which have been purchased by people from B.C.’s Lower Mainland or from Alberta. The upward slope of the mountain in West Kelowna rising from the lake means many homes in the area have spectacular views of Kelowna to the east or Lake Okanagan to the south and west.
While West Kelowna certainly has its share of million dollar mansions for sale, it remains a friendly community with something for everyone. There are apartment-style condos on the market that surround the golf course at surprisingly affordable prices. Neighbourhood hockey fans will enjoy watching the West Kelowna Warriors of the BCHL play during the winter at the Mount Boucherie Community Centre. Getting out of West Kelowna is fairly easy, with the connector to the Coquihalla Highway just minutes down Highway 97, making Vancouver an easy 4.5-hour drive. West across the bridge through Kelowna to the airport is a 45-minute drive.
West Kelowna Schools
Schools in West Kelowna are administered by School District 23. For parents who yearn for their children to walk to school from their home, there are eight elementary schools in the district, including Hudson Road, Rose Valley, Chief Tomat Elementary, Shannon Lake, George Pringle, Glenrosa, Helen Gorman and Sensisyusten House of Learning. Middle schools in the area include Constable Neil Bruce and Glenrosa for Grades 7 to 9. There is just one high school for Grades 10 to 12 in West Kelowna – Mount Boucherie Senior Secondary School.
