The West Kelowna Lifestyle

West Kelowna, once known as Westbank, sits on the western shore of Lake Okanagan in beautiful British Columbia. The community is next to Highway 97 (Okanagan Highway) and connects to the larger community of Kelowna on the east side of the lake via the William R. Bennett Bridge. The area was first known as Stekatkolxne'ut, a First Nations village. In the 1800s, fur traders called it MacDonald's Plain. It was renamed Westbank in 1908 and incorporated as West Kelowna in 2007.

The waterfront at Gelatly Bay on Okanagan Lake plays a large part in West Kelowna's lifestyle and has a two-kilometre boardwalk connecting various Kelowna beaches and parks. The bay has platforms for jumping and floating, a zipline, and other outdoor opportunities. The area's regional parks are popular for camping and visitors during summer. Outdoor activities continue year-round, with a nearby ski resort and cross-country ski trails. Recreation facilities in the town include three ice skating rinks and a pool.

Types of Homes in West Kelowna

Homes in West Kelowna

Homes in West Kelowna consist primarily of detached single-family homes, although some newer townhouses are available. The prominent architectural styles are ranch homes, bungalows, split-level properties, and 20th-century Modern style. West Kelowna offers many new construction homes for sale, so additional styles come on the market periodically.

Proximity to Okanagan Lake can have a significant impact on price. Waterfront homes for sale in West Kelowna can fetch as much as $5 million, while luxury properties sell for around $2 million on the hillsides. That's not to suggest that most people are priced out of the market in West Kelowna. Smaller homes can sell in the $300,000 range, with typical single-family residences selling between $500,000 and $600,000.

West Kelowna Amenities

Anything that seems to be missing from West Kelowna can usually be found just 10 minutes away downtown on the other side of the lake.
